In Texas, all motorized vessels and all sailboats over 14 feet. There are 3 categories of exempt vessels.
Registration is required for: All motorized vessels and all sailboats over 14 feet
Exempt from registration:
- Non-motorized vessels 14 feet or less
- Vessels used exclusively on private waters
- Vessels documented by the US Coast Guard (still require registration number)

Texas boat registration fees range from $32.00 to $150.00 depending on vessel length and type. The state applies a 6.25% sales tax, and title fees are $27.00.

How to Register Your Boat in Texas
To register a boat in Texas, you must apply within 30 days of purchase through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Online registration is available. Registration is valid for 2 years.
Registration can be completed:
- Online: Through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) portal
- In Person: At your local Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) office
- By Mail: Download forms from the official website

- Completed registration application form
- Bill of Sale or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO)
- Valid photo identification
- Proof of sales tax payment
- Hull Identification Number (HIN) verification
Title & Title Transfer
Texas requires a boat title for all motorized vessels and sailboats over 14 feet. The title application fee is $27.00, and transfers cost $28.00.

Registration Renewal
Validity period: 2 years
Renewal is available through the same channels as initial registration — online (if available), in person, or by mail. Be sure to renew before your registration expires to avoid late fees.

Boater Safety Education Requirements
Texas requires a boater safety course. Born on or after September 1, 1993, operating vessels with 15+ HP or PWCs. The minimum age to operate a vessel is 13.

Placement: Both sides of the forward half of the vessel
Sticker placement: Within 6 inches after the registration number
